Eight months after the closure of Library.nu: Are there any good alternatives for downloading free e-books?

In February 2012, the great book sharing website library.nu was closed after a court order issued by “The International Publishers Association and the German Publishers and Booksellers Association“. The question that immediately arised: Are there alternatives to library.nu?

For months, I only knew three good websites. None of them, however, was as good as library.nu. The one I liked the most was a website called the “BookFinder“. Today, I found a new website that seems to be a good candidate to be called the “Successor of Library.nu”. This website impressed me by the number of books it contains. In addition, and more importantly, it impressed me by the fact that you do not have to wait before downloading any book; all downloads start automatically without even the need for typing a CAPTCHA.  Finally, it allows you to simultaneously download multiple  books . This great website is called LegalReads.

Concerning the other “not bad” library.nu-like websites, I personally recommend the Book Finder website. Through my experience during the past months, it was the best one of all others.

Compared with LegalReads.com, there are certain problems with the BookFinder. Firstly, there is a download limitation in which you cannot download more than a specific number of books at a time (LegalReads allows multiple simultaneous downloads). Secondly, downloads takes longer time to start (LegalReads downloads virtually start in less than 10 seconds). Finally, and most troubling, sometimes, BookFinder used to give me a message that the book I wanted to download is “not available for downloading at the time being” and to “come back later“. Apart from these three minor disadvantages, my first impression is that both the BookFinder website and the LegalReads website contain the same number of e-books. Only further experimentation will reveal the difference.

There are other two alternatives. However, they are very unreliable. Nonetheless, maybe you can use them as a last resort if  you could not find the book you wanted in the above two websites:

1)  Library Genesis Project

2) Free Book Spot

Update 20/01/2013:

www.legalreads.com is now closed. In my opinion, this leaves the BookFinder as the “Heir of Library.nu”. After using it for more than 1.5 years, here is my review of it.

Below is a compilation of different books websites. I compiled them from different sources in addition to comments posted in my Blog. I feel indebted to thank “boral” who contributed a nice list of 10 popular websites. Please, like boral did, if you know about other “good” websites not mentioned in my list, then drop a comment!

Note: The websites followed by five red  starts (*****) are the best in my opinion.

Books websites:

www.en.bookfi.org: Absolutely the best. On top of the main page today (28.02.2014), the owners wrote that the website contains more than “2,221,712” books.

# www.ebdb.net: The main page today (28.02.2014) says that the website has “2 284 324 books”. *****

www.library-genesis.com *****

www.freebookspot.es  *****

# www.theaudiobookbay.com  *****

www.ebookee.org *****

# www.magazinesdownload.org/category/ebooks: As the website’s URL clearly indicates, this website is dedicated mainly to magazines. After exploring this website, I found an E-Book section. What is interesting that this section contains the NYT and USA Today best seller books each compressed in a rar file. For example, here is a link to a page in the website containing links to “NewYork Times Best Sellers 19 January 2014 Non-Fiction“.

www.ebook3000.com: Has a lot of magazine too.

www.epubbud.com: For epub books.

# ww.uz-translations.net: This websites is specialized with languages-related books, audio books, videos, and softwares.

www.plentyofebooks.net: This is an interesting website. I haven’t tested it yet but the design is excellent. This is a link to a page in the website linking to a torrent file containing 13.9 GB of books. They wrote, “We are taking the example of All-in-One torrent.

www.novels.ws: This website is dedicated for novels. However, it is still new. I discovered this website on 28.2.2014 through an Ad on the top of the main page of www.plentyofbooks.net. The Ad was: “Our New Site Novels.ws Launched.

# www.freescience.info: In their own words, “FreeScience.info provides more than 2000 free scientific books“.

# www.www.textbooknova.com: The website’s main page says, “Stop paying for college and high school level text books, get them here for free”. *****

www.magazinesdownload.org *****

www.worldmags.net: This website is specialzed with magazines. There are hundreds of magazines that are always updated. *****

www.ebook3000.com: It has books too.

# www.avaxhome.cc/magazines: The website is mainly for books and this is a section for magzines.

#  MyAnonaMouse.net: Audiobooks and books. You must be a user to surf the site.

Medical Books:

German Books and Magazines:

www.ebook-hell.to: This website is specialized with German books. *****

# www.almanii.blogspot.com: The best website. It has almost the most famous books, videos, dictionaries, and software. *****

www.magazinesdownload.org/category/german: German magazines section of this specialized magazines website.

# www.eng.bookfi.org: This famous website is not dedicated to German books nor does  it mention that it has German books. However, I could find many German books in it.

Arabic books:

www.aljlees.com: Al-Jlees library (Maktabat Aljalees). The biggest arabic books website that I know of. *****

# www.4shared.com: This famous file sharing website apparently does not delted Arabic books that are uploaded to it. I always find Arabic books there.

    legalreads.com closed down…

    • I used it two days ago… After reading your comment, I thought it is a temporary thing. But the following indicates not: “This website is closing!”.

One of the suggested alternatives is “Coinread”.This website is not for free and it seems that it requires either a money subscription or uploading e-books.

I noticed that CoinRead has the same kind of links as legalreads. Could it be that owners of both websites are the same? Legalreads is not generating any money while coinread can and will!

      • I guess my speculations in there place that both websites are owned by the same people. The reason? Now, when you visit http://www.legalreads.com, you find yourself directed immediately http://www.coinreads.com!

This explains why they had the same type of links! Legalreads was totally free! As I said, coinread can generate money while legalreads could not!

  2. A few weeks ago, http://www.coinreads.com used to have many limitations (it used to request a sign in using a google account in addition to have a limited number of downloads based on having “coins” that you gain either by donating money or uploading books (you will then earn coins when other users download these books).

Currently, http://www.coinread.com is providing a free service and seems to have cancelled the coins system. As a result, we can say that it provides as much an excellent service as that used by be provided by http://www.legalreads.com.

Lets wait to see if coinread will keep to be free. If it does, then the services it provide are better than the BookFinder (http://en.bookfi.org/). If the owners of this website decided to go back and use the “coins” policy, then certainly the BookFinder (http://en.bookfi.org/) would be undoubtedly the best; the only disadvantages in it, compared to http://www.coinread.com, being that it doesn’t allow you to have more than one download at a time and that some downloads are sometimes temporarily unavaialble.

coinreads is free but if you register, you’ll find more books than in the no-registration mode; and these ones are not available for free.

    • Hi,

Yes, you are right. Thank you. However, this was not the situation a month or so ago. I hope that this website remains free because of how many books it contains, in addition to no download limitations.

  4. Coinread.com is back to their old policy: Download is not free and you need to pay for it!

After signing in with your google account (which is a must), a link called “top-up account” leads you to a page with the following instructions:

    Top-up your account
    What are coins?

coinread.com uses a unit of credit called “coins” to enable microtransactions between buyers and sellers.
100 coins are equal in value to $USD 1.00

How do I top-up my account with coins?

You can acquire coins by either Selling your eBook on the marketplace or getting coins using one of the methods listed below:
bitcoin 2X special offer!! for every 100 coins you buy using bitcoin, we will give you 100 coins extra for free!

webmoney can be bought using wire transfer

amazon.com giftcard can be bought using credit card

Confused? Have a question?? We would be happy to help you! just send an email to: info@coinread.com

    Nothing is for free!

Now that coinread has gone back to its initial limitations (login with google; “coins” system, etc.), does someone here has any suggestion for another website, that is, a new alternative, similar to what gigapedia and librrary.nu used to offer?

    • Mr. Gab,

Yes, coinread is unfortunately “back to its initial limitations…”.

The only alternative that I can not test if whether it is as good or not as coinread or library.nu is the BookFinder (www.en.bookfi.org). The only two disadvantages with the BookFinder is that at certain points, some books are “not available” for downloading and you need to check the website again at another time to be able to download them. The second disadvantage is that you can not download books simultaneously.

Otherwise, BookFinder (www.en.bookfi.org) is a good alternative and the best among all other free books sharing websites that I know of.

Smashwords.com. That’s where I have my short stories available for free. It’s difficult to justify charging for a 3,000 word story, but if people really like them, I have pay links as well.

      5) Click on it and the download will start automatically.

  13. Coinreads.com and LegalReads.com are no longer existing! Minutes ago, I was shocked to read the following message in their website:

26-January-2013 :: THE END OF COINREAD

Coinread is no more. Unfortunately we have to close our doors and switch off the site since we can not continue to offer direct downloads to users, we tried collecting donations but that wouldn’t cover the large costs of offering over a million books.

  14. Posted by Dewizardz on 02/10/2013 at 16:07

pls,can i get the best site for eBooks, journal and publications?

    • This is a hard question! There is not a single perfect website like Library.nu was! I guess you need to go through all of the above mentioned websites (eitehr in the post or in the comments) so as to find the book you are searching for. The BookFinder is the best.

    • I have reasons to believe that this is an extremely sophisticated spam comment. Because of the 10% uncertainty I have, I published it, but removed the link from it.

  15. Posted by Booklober on 02/15/2013 at 00:33

There is a great alternative for library.nu. It’s the best in the world. Help these Russian guys out with donations. Spread the word for free knowledge in the world!

  16. Posted by Mandy on 03/17/2013 at 04:58

I was trying to find alternatives to ebookoid when I came across this page listing many free ebook sites! http://learn-one-thing-a-day.blogspot.com/2012/06/librarynu-alternatives.html Yay!

  17. thank you all , because you are helping to prevent knowledge from been kept limited to those who have the money and power

  18. Posted by Jayne on 08/12/2013 at 20:53

Thanks, great post. I was one of the millions of adoring fans of library.nu, and was devastated when they managed to close it down. Am now using en.bookfi.org (i think this is one of many mirrors for bookos etc.), and also freebookspot.es
but as of today I logged onto freebookspot and get ‘website unavailable’.

maybe they’ve got freebookspot down as well? Does anyone know more about this?

  19. […] there are few websites that contain free e-books (this post contain the best ones that I know of). The best one in my opinion is a Russian (or Ukranian?) […]
