The above was created automatically by a wonderful site that I always visit whenever I need an e-book. Most of the times, I find my book there. More than 2 years ago, when I first was introduced to this website, it was called “gigapedia”. This site is now called “Library.nu”.

If Library.nu ever opened back up registration it will be a miracle. Legal maters is the main key why there can be no invites. If you have an account don’t over use it else you will be blocked as well.
I have no control over accounts. Nor can I add new members to there site.
However this is why I made Essentials For Knowledge. A way for us to still be able to share info and get textbooks and e-books on the web. I have spent the last 2 weeks looking for the best websites. also spent over 80+ hours testing them posting them in a table html. Then answering questions. I spent most of the time searching for these sites. There is 1000s of crappy spam sites out there. Some where not even worth calling an e-book site. All sites I found good where ranked 5 stars max. but if the site was based on what the users really wanted it was ranked 6 stars.
Sorry all I can not undo what has been done, however I have not been sitting on my hands :)]

Luckily, library.nu is not down or closed by the US government, thanks to a comment by “addrianey@gmail.com”, I discovered that library.nu has a backup URL. Read the following information from the main page of library.nu:

I was able to log into library.nu via the secured connection link that is posted above in the comments. After reading your comment, I immediately thought that this “Nenad” must have had incorrectly entered his username and password.
Minutes ago, I tried to log in but failed!!! The password to the website is stored in my browser so I can safely exclude that I entered a wrong password!!!
What is most interesting, when I entered the URL http://www.library.nu in my address bar, the site which opened on the screen was google books (www.books.google.com/books)!!!
Are they closing library.nu?

A few days ago, if you noticed, google and wikipedia and other websites blocked their services in objection for a proposed united states bill called “SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)”
Here is a precise description of the “brilliant” law:
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a United States bill introduced by U.S. Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) to expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Provisions include the requesting of court orders to bar advertising networks and payment facilities from conducting business with infringing websites, and search engines from linking to the sites, and court orders requiring Internet service providers to block access to the sites. The law would expand existing criminal laws to include unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content, imposing a maximum penalty of five years in prison. A similar bill in the U.S. Senate is titled the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA).

I fear the idea that in the near future, I will have to PAY for every book that I download!!!
On the other hand, if you and I wrote a book, would you like others to download it for free? Wouldn’t you like to profit from all your efforts and hard work?
If I agreed with prohibiting “stealing” copyrighted material then this is so because of the above. Also, hoping that if all people were to buy ebooks, then their prices would become significantly lower!
I wouldn’t be amazed, though, that online piracy would be prevented and the prices still remained high!
But… again… Put yourself in the shoes of a book author!

Would you allow me to disagree with you?
If you wrote a book, please imagine how much effort, time, and money would have you invested in it! Wouldn’t you like to get compensated for your hard work?
Some might simply agree to allow others to use what they write for free, but as the proverb says, “Easy come… easy go”. If a lot of effort, time, or money is invested in something, then it is very hard for someone to not want a compensation.
What is the solution then? This is what I alluded to in my previous comment: “I don’t want my hard work to be not compensated. At the same time, I understand how money is a problem to many people on this planet. Therefore, I suggest that authors should be compensated… but reasonably!”
If someone wrote a book and is compensated in a “fair” way, then he would be encouraged to write another book or maybe write a new version of his book!!!
Viva to copyrights… But before that, viva to “un-greedy” publishers!

Moa’bite : allow me to disagree that expensive academic books are remunerating their authors. The author’s fees on such a textbook are rather negligible, and actually not even necessary – as most of such books are written by… publicly-paid employees (scientists, teachers etc.).
No serious professional scientist that I know would ever consider making a living by writing books. It’s not even worth the effort “academically” – writing, correcting, getting 20 textbooks published is tedious but brings very little in comparison to one good 4-page paper accepted in Nature or Science. Having one’s name occasionally on such a book is always nice but makes little for a career…
A tremendous part of the price paid for such books actually ends up in the pocket of the [private] publishing company. Please take note that it’s usually the same companies who already make a large profit with scientific journals (where publicly-employed scientists write articles for free, or must even pay to get published, these articles being then reviewed here again for free by other publicly-paid scientists). And the final quality is not even guaranteed. For more information, see the ongoing boycott of Elsevier’s by mathematicians…
Anyway : the idea of private publishing companies to legitimate their high prices is that, given the very limited readership (how many of your friends read treatises in geochemistry in the bus?), someone has to pay big money to allow the very publication, costs of editing, organizing the printing chain etc. The costs usually supported by 1M readers in the case of cheap Penguin fiction books must therefore weigh heavily on the shoulders of some 10000 specialist guys and univ libraries interested in the academic book.
Yet, even in spite of such unavoidable costs, they still manage to make profit. Especially given the ever-increasing move towards on-line (rather than printed) access.
These companies are really to even dare perform such a hold-up. Unfortunately, the scientific establishment has other things to think about, and therefore is very slow to get aware of how everybody is getting ransacked in the science-business…

That was my idea: If online piracy stopped, then the “10000 specialist guys” would be doubled or tripled or I don’t know how much more!

So, to sum up your opinion, even if online piracy stopped, then prices will never go down. What is most important, authors are profiting little, if any, from the publishing of their works! So, viva online piracy?

The problem in this case is: who makes the first move? If publishers divide the prices by a factor “10” (quite unrealistic, but let’s imagine anyway: a 300-page treatise of geochemistry now costs 30$ instead of a normal 300$) – do you really think 10 times more people will buy the book?
The readership would still be quite limited. You can not convince laymen and everybody to buy such a book. Impossible, because of the very topic, which is not written to please or be sold… only to be useful, like a hammer or a microscope.
And that’s my point. I could mention a few highly-specialized academic books that I doubt more than 100 “physical” people in the world ever bought. Yet these books have been published! Perhaps were there ~5000 copies printed, enough to fulfill the demands of 4500 universities willing to buy it (if some of their employees thinks it’s useful to someone in some of the departments). Of the 500 remaining, some of the few specialists in the field would buy a copy for their personal use (better than always borrowing at the univ library). They’d still buy it if it were 500$ – they just *need* it to work.
So in any case, whatever the price of such a book, most libraries and “users in need” would have already bought it – because they need it! They would perhaps buy a second one (more exemplars for lending to students, or one for “on-site reading”, or “in case my office burns” etc.), but would not buy it ten times.
The same goes for professors/scientists : one does not buy a book because it’s cheap or fun to read or great to own, but because we cannot work daily without having it. Publishers know that, they don’t even have to promote the new books with ads on TV – they know most academic libraries will buy a copy, “to have it”, and most specialists of the field, “to work with it”. Raise the price, it won’t dissuade them. Lower the price, no more readers, but less profit.
Please take note that in both cases the books would be (normally) bought with “public” funding and lab money, the one devoted to daily research and teaching; rarely from one’s own personal salary. Indeed many labs, schools, univs and institutes would save money if books were ten times cheaper, but still they would not buy ten times more books: only the ones they need or think they could need. Maybe a second copy. Or even use some of the spare money to buy a few “less-critical” books – that is, other books they would not even have considered buying before. But definitely, the readership would never be ten times bigger.
Furthermore, I doubt that a 3rd-world country student (my guess: the main audience of ebook websites) whose university could not afford buying a 300$ book, would be ready to spend 30$ for it. Still too expensive – and that’s the reason why a few publishers already offer huge discounts on their journals/books for some countries. They *can* afford it…

As a matter of conclusion, the academic book business behaves somehow like the entertainment majors (movies/music) do: they want to save the “old ways” of making “huge” profit, by not considering – and fighting against – “new ways” to make “some” profit. Such companies believe every mp3 listened to, every ebook one student quotes a graph from, is a disc or paper textbook less they have sold – which is wrong, plain wrong, damn’ wrong.
In the end, it will cost them a lot of sweat, legal fees, with near-zero results. And with many negative effects for everybody : preventing “poor scientists” to improve or increase their scientific outcome ; meanwhile, sucking growing amounts of public money in “rich countries” despite the relative cutdown on science funding there. Not even their more faithful customers – the libraries – are spared, and some start to reconsider their contracts with journal publishers.

You made a point; a very strong point! Things are now clear to me. I totally agree with what you wrote. I am a medical student. Whenever I was not able to read a medical paper because medical journals required as high as 35$ dollars for downloading one single paper, I thought: “Although it is unfair, medical papers shouldn’t be kept free… By requesting huge moneys in return for papers, I think that this money is used to enhance medical research by some way or another!!!”… But unfortunately, as I understood from your comments, the greatest percentage of this money goes into the pockets of “greedy” publishers!
But I want to make sure of something: If a publisher sells a book for $500 [*], don’t you think that the author/s would profit from that? Are you sure that they are doing it for free or for little profits? Don’t they get a percentage from the sales, say 10, 20, or whatever percentage?

To answer your question: in the majority of cases, there is little profit (in money or fame) for someone to write a book, and that’s not something most scientists would try to do “spontaneously”.
Most academic books fall into two cases: either it was written at the request of the publisher (“we will publish a new book on some hot topic, would you like to contribute some chapter, for free, by sending us some of your recent research results, even already published in journals? of course you, your lab and students will get a 25% discount on the printed edition”), or it was published at the request of some special group (for example: conference proceedings which are good and interesting enough to be reformatted as a book).
One should make an exception for “University Presses” which are notably less profit-driven, and can afford to publish almost anything for a quite low price (even some materials of little interest). Even if not so impressive as big ‘famous’ commercial companies, they are a good way for someone to publish his research despite a probably limited readership. And quality is at least as good as everywhere else.

Not “afraid” but it should be clear that I alone endorse the responsibility of my opinions, not my lab or colleagues. Even though the recent call by mathematicians to boycott Elsevier would rather prove my point 🙂
Oh and something more: I know at least some nice people who work in such companies 🙂 It’s more of the whole “publishing business” model that people complain, than of specific companies. (The mathematicians obviously chose Elsevier – owning something like 75% of the market – to give their message more visibility)

Hi everyone! I’ve got the same problem.. i cannot access my account, didn’t know that they got legal issues..Does that mean starting from now we can’t download from library.nu anymore? Then…can anybody tell me which website that provides us a free ebook?

LNU is dead dead dead. About 90% of the links are down now they broke with ifile. I’m guessing some of the moderator guys still have the 6 tb collection of ebooks but we wont see another site like this for the next years. I would gladly pay 1000 usd for the whole collection though….

If I was “the government” or something in charge of making those legal decisions, or the academic publishers seeking “revenge”, I would not have killed Library.nu but done with it as Google has done with YouTube: buy it and turn it into a platform for promotion/outlet store. Legally, openly, everybody’s-happy-ly. It’s already had an incredible community of followers who are geared exactly to the kind of products they offer, and their word-of-mouth promotion is much more powerful and far-reaching than any kind of advertisement money can buy. Sadly the big powers seem more capable of shutting down what’s apparently against their interest (profit?) than manipulating it for their own good; and sticking to the old outdated business models (“International Publishers Association, established in 1896”?!!) than opening their mind to new, challenging at first but eventually internationally successful ones.
And I’d say “internationally”. Because in addition to Mr Scouflaire’s10k specialists who want the highly esoteric books for their immediate need, there would be tenfold or hundredfold the number potential specialists, in and out of the developed countries, who would greatly benefit from reading those books -if only they know they exist- and would be willing to pay for them -if only they can afford it. (I beg to differ from Mr Scouflaire’s point: “Lower the price, no more readers, but less profit.”) I’ll speak for my own : I’ve been a bit of everything, a publishing employee, a journal writer (whose pay was pathetically low), a translator with publishing contracts (thus entitled to have my say on the “If you all leech, the publisher can’t pay me” problem), a book sharer and scanner, and most consistently a “3rd world country student” who’s been relying on Library.nu and Avaxhome.ws from as long as I can remember. I still pay for the occasional 20$ out-of-copyright book which is so neglected even Library.nu users have no need for, and which means one-tenth or more of my regular salary. But I won’t be paying for the 16$ article with no preview on JSTOR or Muse for fear it will turn out to be a 5-page irrelevant rant of an outdated opinion.
The actions against Library.nu as well as the JSTOR case against Aaron Swartz last year were crises that show the conflicts between ossified business/management frames of mind and the new technical-habitual environment in which they operate. This event will no doubt spark similar debates, somehow always confined in independent blogs and ezines or forums and never heard/participated by those wielding the law. But hopefully from those debates some solutions will arise, because the future is in the hands of the new (present) generation before they become old and oppress the forthcoming ones.
How? I was thinking of something along the lines of cdbaby.com, which cuts off (partly) the middle man and let audience and musicians interact in a more immediate way. I realize there are still expenses to be had, from hosting and bandwidth as well as the intellectual work such as editing or reviewing to maintain the quality of its production; but I always imagine the latter depends on the community more than the money. (Correct me if I’m wrong…) But the conversion from paper books to ebooks will surely save a lot on printing, storage and shipping on the seller’s part, and the ebook’s immediate acquirement is a huge selling point in the buyer’s eyes. Between a costless and illegal ebook available at a (actually several) click and a $20 paper book to wait a month to arrive while praying it’s not lost on the way? I’ll definitely pick the first. Imagine what it’s like with “tens of books on the subject which cost around 50-100$, *if still can be found somewhere*”. Between a scanned, OCRed and illegal ebook and a nice, well-formatted, author-profitting ebook? I’ll grumpily choose the latter, if only it’s affordable and easy to do. Academic books often cost from 2/3 up to the original price in electronic format. Some primary materials on Amazon are even more expensive than the paperbacks, which is ridiculous to those who are used to acquiring a whole library in a borrowed usb.
Or the writers who are the real contributors of knowledge can set up an “International Writers’ Association” to promote and engage in such a distribution model: releasing ebooks of their articles/books, accepting payment in small doses or voluntary donations (look at Wikipedia’s donation campaign! Making 1$ from each of 5000 readers is better than turning them away by a 50$ price tag), and heck, even putting on advertisement (Library.nu’s revenue should be an example, not a reason for embittered jealousy!). A countermovement, while slower and taking more effort, is a better chance of changing the prevailing legal and business models in the long run than guerilla activities.

After you do a search, on the result page look to the right end under “Mirrors”. The “dl”s are download links. Or you can go straight to the mirrors and search: bookfi.org, libgen.info (but both sites use Russian).
I just found out http://ishare.iask.sina.com.cn/ has a quite impressive collection too, if you are not afraid of the “fishy Chinese” 🙂

please go to http://libgen.info : there you can see a box to type your key word (if you are using google chrome it will help you to translate the page to English). On the right side of the box you can see a YELLOW button click on it..(you can also see the options for author..etc), Then click on the title link > there you can see the details of the book (the picture of the book appears on the screen may not be same) there you can see the format and size (in bytes) along with a YELLOW button….click on it…….then the download will start…..
by the way what about http://gen.lib.rus.ec/ ….are you still able to access it…?
